"HOUSTON CHRONICLE"

FEBRUARY 2009

COURSE REVIEW

"GREENS,NOT LAKES
MAKE IT SPECIAL"

Cypress Lakes Golf Club
Houston Chronicle Review
February 2009

Cypress Lakes Golf Club’s baby is its greens. They have been consistently among the best in the Houston area since the course opened in 1999.

When a Chronicle review team played the course last Friday, they weren’t disappointed. Even during the dormant season, the greens were in great condition.

There is no need to overseed the Champion Bermuda, which is an ultra dwarf putting surface.

“Golfers don’t care what color the green is as long as they’re rolling fast and are in good condition,” said Jared Bonar, head superintendent at the Cypress course.

Last Friday, the greens were between 12 1/2-13 on the stimpmeter. The greens were single-cut and not rolled, yet they were fast. From mid-January to mid-March will be the fastest the greens will be at Cypress Lakes, which was designed and built by Jim Fazio.

If you misread a green here, it can be troublesome. But you can catch a break on them.

“We try to have a fair pin placement daily,” said Scott Richardson, the golf club’s assistant golf professional.

To score well, you need control off the tee box, a short game and hit to the center of the green. This is a course where it helps to look at the pin sheet.

You don’t need driver off every hole. Just stay straight. Alignment is crucial, especially on the par 3s.

“It places a premium on driving accuracy,” said Frank Miller of the Chronicle review team. “What I like about it is you have to shape the ball on all the par 5s, but he (Fazio) gives you a good target to hit at.

“On practically every hole, you don’t look at the trouble, you look at the target you need to hit the ball to.”

There’s water on nine holes. It’s enough to make the round interesting, but water doesn’t dominate the course.

Beware wind and water

Wind and water are Cypress Lakes’ defense. Not length. From the tips, the course plays 7.024 yards at par 72.

The signature hole, and perhaps the course’s most difficult , is the par-4, 15th , which plays at 464 yards from the championship tees and 433 from the back.

The 15th is one of the few holes that pine trees line the entire fairway. There are two bunkers, one front left of the green and another right of the green. In addition, it has a small, sloping green.

Another good hole is the par-5 second hole, with water lining the right side, and coming into play.

Only the tee boxes on the par 3s and the driving range tee boxes were overseeded.

Cypress Lakes’ practice facilities are excellent, especially for a daily fee course. There is a large practice putting green, a practice chipping green and a practice sand bunker. The range features two sets of tee boxes and numerous targets. The driving range turf was in outstanding condition, and the practice putting green had no bumps and was fast.

Practice like they play

“We like to keep them in great shape,” Richardson said. “ (Golfers) want to have a similar feel to what the course will be like.”

Membership is available, and the facility can handle large tournaments and banquets.

Unlike many courses, Cypress Lakes offers nine-hole rates.

Review

Each month, the Chronicle features a different public golf course and reviews it with players of varying skill levels. Their impressions of Cypress Lakes Golf Club:

Positives: Fast greens. The menu has been updated and there’s a big-screen, high-definition TV in the grill area. Pro shop well-stocked, and practice facilities top-notch.

Negatives: Pricey, but not your typical daily fee course. Discounted prices offered online.

Overall: If you don’t mind spending a little extra, well worth it. A good layout where there’s several easy holes mixed in. A good course to play winter golf and any time of the year.

Notah Begay III wins the Cypress Lakes Open

4-Time PGA Tour Champion shoots 68 on Cypress Lakes' Pure Rolling greens.

4 Time PGA Tour Champion Notah Begay captured the Tight Lies Tour Cypress Lakes Open on November 10th and 11th at Cypress Lakes Golf Club.  Begay shot a 4 under 68 in the first round, and won the event in a playoff over Andrew Dresser when the event was halted halfway into round 2 due to inclement weather.  Begay parred the Tough 18th Hole at Cypress Lakes to win his first event on the Tight Lies Winter Series Tour.  Begay was impressed with the golf course.  "This course is great!", said Begay.  "It's a golf course that can play really tough, or not so tough, but the greens are just so good".  Begay added that the windy conditions made Cypress Lakes Golf Club show it's teeth.  "Great golf course, and fun to play".  Head Professional Tim Poulos, who played alongside Notah Begay was pleased with the outcome.  "When you have a player as successful as Notah come out here and win the tournament, it's a great compliment". Added Poulos, "but when you hear him talk about how much he likes this course and our greens, it speaks volumes about the work our Superintendent Jared Bonar and his staff are doing."  Cypress Lakes is already in the works to hold the 2009 Cypress Lakes Open as well.
